OUR FOOD
There's fried chicken. And there's Kentucky Fried Chicken. Trust us, your taste buds will know the difference. Only Kentucky Fried Chicken is meticulously hand-breaded in the Colonel's secret herbs and spices and pressure-cooked in small batches to preserve freshness. Our Popcorn Chicken and Nuggets are stored in the freezer and cooked in the deep fryer.
You can't make the Colonel's finest without the best quality chicken.... duh. That means real 100% Aussie chicken is delivered fresh in 97% of our stores. We buy our chicken from reputable suppliers in Australia like Inghams, Steggles and Golden Farms - if those names sound familiar, it's because they supply the same chicken you'd pick up at your local.
When it comes to Kentucky Fried Chicken, leftovers are rarely an issue (as anyone who's ever had their 3 Piece Feed demolished by hungry mates can attest). But on the rare occasion there is chicken left over, we've partnered with Foodbank and OzHarvest to make sure it goes to people in need.
Contrary to popular opinion, we do actually have options at KFC if you're all about that plant-based life. Yes, we know what the "C" stands for, but hey, we love everyone equally.
The good news is our famous hot Chips are vegetarian-friendly, as they are cooked in canola oil and don't contain any animal products. That goes for the salt too, cos we know how much you love that! However, we can't guarantee that there won't be some cross-contamination with utensils and potentially Chips being cooked in the same oil as Popcorn Chicken and Nuggets, so we'll let you make that call yourself.
Some other options include:
- Coleslaw (as long as you can eat eggs)
- Dinner Rolls and Burger buns don't contain any animal products
- Mashed Potato without Gravy and Chocolate Mousse are also fine for vegetarian who consume dairy
Kentucky Fried Chicken is a treat that should be enjoyed as part of a balanced lifestyle, which includes regular exercise. And no, going for a KFC run doesn't count. If you're looking for healthier options at KFC, here are some tips that might be right up your alley:
- Choose No Sugar drink options such as water or Pepsi Max
- Choose a regular serve of chips or regular combo instead of large
- Bring a hungry mate. They'll be more than happy to help you finish off what you can't!
The Colonel liked to run a tight kitchen. Any cook who didn't meet his high standards of care and quality could expect a sharp rap on the knuckles from his cane. He'd roll up his sleeves and show 'em how it was done... or show 'em the door.
Our food today is prepared to highest standards in accordance with established cooking procedures, just the way the Colonel would have wanted it. It's all cooked for a specified amount of time using timers to ensure it's done properly, then held hot for another short, specified amount of time (and from the way our customers get through it all, that's usually more than enough!). If it doesn't happen to be sold before the holding time expires, it's withdrawn from sale to make sure you get only the best of the best. No ifs, no buts.
Nope, we haven't used palm oil to cook any of our products since 2012, when we switched to using a high oleic canola oil.
We reckon you can't get much better than what's already in your backyard - that's why we try to source local true blue Aussie ingredients where possible. All of our chicken comes from Aussie poultry farms and most of our fresh produce (such as lettuce and tomatoes) are grown Down Under, as is the flour we use to make our burger buns, tortillas and dinner rolls. The potatoes we use to make our famous chips generally come from Tassie and Victoria, and the high-oleic canola oil we cook 'em in is also home-grown. Sometimes due to low cropping levels (e.g. caused by bad weather), we might need to source produce or oil from overseas - but that's always as a last resort and only temporary.
